Which should you use, perfunctory or peremptory? The adjective peremptory may mean commanding, decisive, or expected to be obeyed immediately and without asking questions. The adjective perfunctory is used to describe an action that is carried out superficially, without real interest, feeling, or effort.

Incorrect: He gave it a peremptory glance.
Correct: He gave it a perfunctory glance.
Incorrect: He is not a perfunctory person.
Correct: He is not a peremptory person.
