Which should you use, exclude or preclude? The verb exclude may mean to prevent someone or something from entering a place or taking part in an activity, or to intentionally not include something. The verb preclude means to prevent something or make it impossible, or prevent someone from doing something.

Incorrect: He said that the appointment did not exclude him from discussing the project at planning board level.
Correct: He said that the appointment did not preclude him from discussing the project at planning board level.
Incorrect: Consult your attorney to determine if your home country is precluded from this visa program.
Correct: Consult your attorney to determine if your home country is excluded from this visa program.
